A large proportion of the fleets owned by the Indian Shipowners have been insured with the Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association (Bermuda) Limited, including a majority share of all the large shipping companies and numerous full fleet entries.

A similarly large share of Indian small and specialised vessels such as mini bulk carriers, barges, tugs, dredgers, ferry, and offshore vessels of more than 130 Indian Shipowners are entered with the Shipowners' Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association (Luxembourg).

Every licensed insurance broker shall display, in all their correspondences with all stakeholders, their name registered with the Authority, address of the Registered and Corporate Office, IRDA license number, the category for which the insurance broker is licensed, the validity period of the license. Insurance brokers are not permitted to use any other name in their correspondence/literature/letterheads without the prior approval of the Authority.
